Concepts of SIP Trunking

By Mark A. Miller, P.E., President, DigiNet Corporation
Submitted by Smoothstone

As interest in the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has grown, new and innovative applications have been developed. One of these is the SIP trunk, which can be used to connect IP PBX systems with service provider networks, and more effectively replace traditional trunks that are based on Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) technologies. The SIPconnect Technical Recommendation, developed by an industry organization known as the SIP Forum, provides implementation recommendations for these SIP trunks. A case study, demonstrating the benefits of SIP trunking that have been realized for a Smoothstone customer, will be presented to illustrate these concepts.
