Further opening of the Belgian telecommunications market

Abstract
On 18 July 2011, the informal committee formed by the Flemish, French-speaking and German-speaking regulators for the Belgian audiovisual sector as well as the Belgian Institute for Postal services and Telecommunications (IBPT - BIPT) issued simultaneously their aligned, albeit respective, decisions for the opening of the triple play market across the whole country by 1 August 2011.

The regulators were especially concerned by the fact that, despite significant improvements resulting from increased competition between cable and telecommunications networks, Belgian consumers were still paying high prices in comparison with neighboring countries and few alternative actors had been able to establish themselves and grow in Belgium, absent, notably, any access to the television market.
