Abstract:
With the explosive growth of the internet and so many companies expanding their operations to the online space, the battle for the coveted first page listings in the top 4 search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask) are more competitive than ever. However, many marketing managers focus on the wrong things when it comes to search engine optimization, simply because there is so much conflicting information out there. Even Newsweek referred to it as "an obscure procedure called a "search-engine optimization"" in a recent article. Let's face it, most people don't know how it all works and don't want to know. As the process gets more and more complex, marketers are increasingly turning to SEO specialists to get results in the search engine listings.

There are many ranking factors but essentially SEO can be broken down into two main categories, on-page factors and off-page factors. On page factors are things that can be done directly to the pages on a site and include keyword usage in title tags, header tags, document text and in the domain name or URL. Off-page factors are things that happen off of the site including keyword usage in links pointing to the site, age of links, authority of domains sending links, quality of pages sending links and subject matter of linking pages. But, are on-page factors and off-page factors equally important? Let's take a closer look at the key on-page factors and off-page factors.
